Forklift Parts in More Detail
There are numerous parts that make up a lift truck. The lift truck's main parts consist of the truck frame, the engine components, the overhead guard, the tilt cylinders and the wheels. What's more, a lift truck has a range of attachments. All the components making up a lift truck are of equal importance because they work together to make the equipment's functions possible. The following paragraphs describe in detail several of the lift truck components.
The Overhead Guard - The overhead guard is really the lift truck's metal roof, which sits atop the operator cab. It's job is to protect the operator while they are utilizing the equipment. The overhead guard ensures that nothing falling from above onto the truck will hurt the driver or damage the controls in the cab. The overhead guard is integral to the frame assembly on several units.
The Mast - Mounted either to the front axle or the forklift frame, the mast is the vertical lift truck part made of interlocking rails. The mast enables the forks to move upwards and down while providing lateral stability. The interlocking rails can either have bushings or bushings as guides. There are a couple of ways the mast can be operated: hydraulically by one or more hydraulic cylinders or chain operated with motive power provided by a hydraulic motor.
Lift Truck Carriage - the forks and various other attachments are mounted to the carriage. The carriage is attached to the mast directly to the hydraulic cylinder or it is attached by chains. To allow the forks to be raised and lowered, the carriage can have either rollers or bushings to guide it in the interlocking mast rails.
Load Back Rest - When the carriage is raised to full height, there is a back rest made of metal that keeps a load from falling backwards. The back rest is either welded or bolted on to the carriage.
Forklift Attachments - There are various kinds of attachments which can be fixed directly to the lift truck's carriage. Forks are the most common attachment. In addition, there are rollers, rotators, L-shaped members, roll clamps, pole handlers and and all that. These different kinds of attachments are very helpful for moving different kinds of loads.
